The 21st century requires a new kind of learner. Think tanks and governmental agencies predict the skills of the future as creativity, curiosity, critical thinking, problem solving, and collaborative communication. These are skills learned, not from standardized test taking, but through instruction and experimentation in science and math. Unfortunately, the United States currently ranks shockingly below average in both subjects. How can we fix this endemic issue? The answer is that we urgently need to improve science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education in our schools. Through STEM, children learn how to work together, learn from mistakes, and creatively problem solve, ensuring not only their own future success, but the future success of our country.
